Hombu - Arai-sensei teaching
The class was the first practical experience of Shorinji Kempo for many new students. The format of the class was as follows:
Gassho
Fontaine-sensei (Huronia Branch) led us through a structured series of exercises to develop the foundation skills to make ukemi safely and effectively.
Following this practice, we split into groups according to rank and studied how to apply ukemi in relation to our curriculum techniques.
Newer members had the opportunity to develop confidence in their ukemi and were able to apply those skills quickly. For the more senior members it was a valuable chance to fully practice techniques which can be fairly dangerous on a hard surface.
We wish to express our gratitude to Fontaine-sensei and the members of Huronia Branch for allowing us to participate in such a valuable practice.

On the evening of July 13, 2005 we presented a cheque for $9,000 to Dr. David Goldbloom, Senior Medical Advisor, Education and Public Affairs of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
The donated funds, which were raised by the 2005 ShorinjiKempo Kickathon, will be used by CAMH to support drug cessation treatment and foster research into the basic causes of drug addiction.
This year's Cornell camp was led by Atsumi-Sensei along with the assistance of one of his students from Japan. Also Hagata-Sensei and Miyata-Sensei were assisting in teaching. About 50 kenshi from East and West coast of the US and Canada and from Japan took part in the camp. The emphasis of the training was on various implementations of the shape of Manji in different goho and juho techniques. The overall spirit of the camp was great even though the weather was not always cooperating.

The funds will be donated to the Centre for Addcition and Mental Health Foundation to support treatment programs and research geared to help drug addicts escape from their addiction.
We are proud to be able to assist the CAMH Foundation in their essential work.
Toronto Branch is extremely happy to have such close ties with Hiate-sensei and the members of Atsugi Doin. Our connection was forged in 1985 when John was an exchange student at the nearby Tokai University. Numerous exchange visits to Atsugi and Toronto have taken place since then.
We wish Atsugi Doin every future success!
