33rd Annual Cornell Camp

Toronto Branch members with Sakuyama-sensei

In a weekend framed by thunderstorms of truly epic proportions, five members of Toronto Branch travelled to Trumansburg, NY to take part in the 33rd annual Cornell Camp - one of the longest continually running Shorinji Kempo events in the world.

The Camp was led this year by Sakuyama-sensei of Ibaragi Takahagi Branch in Japan. The presence of Sakuyama-sensei at the event was incredible since he hails from a region of Japan devastated by the effects of the great eastern earthquake.

Sakuyama-sensei has the rare ability to simultaneously and effectively teach a wide range of skill levels (e.g. beginner to 5th dan) in such a way that all benefit equally. Indeed, the Camp began with close attention to footwork and body movement before moving on to applications.

In addition to the masterful teachings of Sakuyama-sensei, we once again enjoyed the communal spirit of the Camp - one where all members can practice the teachings of Shorinji Kempo and express them in all their activities.

16th Annual Charity "Kickathon" for CAMH Foundation

These legs are gonna do some kickin'!

2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Doshin So - the founder of Shorinji Kempo. Our founder always viewed his art primarily as a way of developing people to equip them to effectively contribute to society. All Shorinjji Kempo branches around the world engage in charitable work or social programs in the month of May in memory of the life of Doshin So.

Since 1996 the members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch have held events in support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

Limbering up - with feeling!

This year we held our 16th Annual Charity Kickathon on behalf of the CAMH Foundation at the CAMH Russell Street site in the university area of Toronto.

The Kickathon in full swing!

All members completed 500 kicks in return for generous sponsorship from many donors.
The final total raised this year was $6,450.

We would like to thank our wonderful friends, families, co-workers and employers for their incredible generosity in supporting this event.

The funds raised in our Kickathon will be used by CAMH to support:

1. Research into the roots causes of drug addiction
2. Treatment programs to help addicts wean themselves off drugs.

We sincerely hope that this initiative will help addicts rebuild their lives and know once again the joy of living.

We would also like to thank the staff of the CAMH Foundation for their hard work in managing the donations this year.

My experience at Toronto Branch

Toronto branch which I have been indebted belonged by many high grade holders whom I could ask for advice, and also the fellows who have lower grade have great motivation and attitude to be better and they helped me a lot to be better together.

I have felt that the environment existence is because of the Toronto branch master McCulloch sensei's character. He often told me that I could ask him for help whatever I need, and the members of the branch were the same to such a stranger who is from abroad (me).

I learned a lot from them, to help each other, the importance for continuing something, how to express oneself (which I'm not good at) and so on.

And I could take part in a seminar and taikai (competition), and also take a grading test for black belt. These have been very wonderful experiences for me and I wouldn't be able to get through those without their support.

The purpose of my restarting Shorinji Kempo had been just to get a black belt. However, it's been changed through my experiences in Toronto branch to continue Shorinji Kempo as long as possible and to help somebody new who want to learn with us just like Toronto branch people did to me.

I'm going back to Japan soon but I'd like to visit them again as a better kenshi someday.

Thank all Toronto branch members very very much. I will never forget you all!

Uebayashi-san visits Toronto Branch

Ms. Hidemi Uebayashi of the WSKO Secretariat of Shorinji Kempo Hombu came to visit our branch on October 25th.

Uebayashi-san had completed her first marathon race the previous day in Niagara Falls and came to Toronto for a few days of sightseeing and rest.

Uebayashi-san has provided invaluable help to Toronto Branch since she began working at Hombu in the mid-1990s so we were absolutely delighted to have her come to our branch.

All of the members of Toronto Branch wish to thank Uebayashi-san from the bottom of our hearts for her constant kindness and help.

Hiate sensei - Atsugi Doin

Continuing my recent visit to Japan, I had the wonderful experience of visiting my teacher Hiate sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan, WSKO & Hombu Instructor) at Atsugi Doin in Nurumizu.

I first met Hiate sensei at Tokai University in June 1985 and he has been my teacher ever since. In addition to his warm and friendly spirit, his technique is simply amazing.

Technical demonstration to the children's group

The class, which included the children's section, started with kihon, goho applications (uchi age zuki, uchi age geri, jun zuki randori), chinkon-gyo, howa and juho applications (uwa uke nage, oshi uke nage).

Hiate sensei's technical demonstrations were dramatic, effective and powerful. In the case of nage waza, Hiate sensei would completely capture the attacker's balance early in each technique making the final throw both effortless and spectacular!

One unexpected surprise was the appearance of Kobayashi sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) - another of the Atsugi area Doin-cho. Kobayashi sensei is well known for his internal approach to technique and it was fascinating to experience his interpretations of several common techniques.

Hiate sensei and his family hosted me during the final part of my stay in Japan. The enormous hospitality they extended was very much appreciated, especially since they all have busy schedules. A few examples: banquet dinner at one of Kanagawa's top fish restaurants, touring temples in Kamakura and ferrying me and all my stuff to Narita.

Atsugi Minami Doin

On October 2nd I was privileged to visit Atsugi Minami Doin in Kanagawa-ken, Japan. The Doin-cho is Morohoshi sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) - one of the teachers I first met in Japan in 1985. Indeed, at that time I had very little ability in Japanese language (not much has changed!) and Morohoshi sensei's skill in English was a real lifeline.

The training at Atsugi Minami Doin consisted mainly of deconstructing familiar techniques to find the essential principles. It was then possible to use each technique effectively without effort despite the attacker's force.

At the end of the class we had some fun looking at some seemingly amazing martial arts techniques and found that they can be reproduced verbatim by simply altering the force of the striking technique (in other words, these techniques are simply tricks).

Morohoshi sensei and his family were kind enough to host me in their home. They graciously took me on a day out to Tokyo which included a chance encounter with several famous sumo stars in Ryogoku.

Suzuki-sensei, Kurihama Doin

Suzuki-sensei (Seihanshi 7th dan) and Saito-san of Kumihama Doin (Yokosuka, Japan) graciously took me along to the Yokohama Ikkaku for dinner. Ikkaku is without a doubt the most beloved restaurant of Shorinji Kempo members and is famous for two types of chicken - soft type and "chewy" type.

I've known Suzuki-sensei since the early 1990s when I practiced in London, U.K. It was great to see him again and listen to his views on Shorinji Kempo. A student of the legendary Misaki-sensei, his enthusiasm for the art is incredible!

I am deeply indebted to Suzuki-sensei, Mika-san (English arrangements!) and Saito-san and sincerely hope I'll have the chance to train at your Doin next time!

Road trip!

Nine of us headed down to New York City over the Labor Day weekend to attend the WSKO North America Instructors Study Session and 2nd North American Shorinji Kempo Taikai.

Around 100 kenshi from WSKO Branches across the USA and Canada were in attendance.

The Study Session was led by Sato sensei (Fukuoka), Kuida sensei (Gumma), Sakashita sensei (Hombu) and Kuramoto sensei (Hombu). Each day the instructors rotated around the different rank groups, teaching us expertly. Kuida sensei also gave a lecture based on his memories of Kaiso and why Shorinji Kempo became an enduring path for him.

On the Saturday evening we had a dinner party at the Ginger House Restaurant (delicious Chinese-themed food). We especially enjoyed chatting with kenshi from other Branches and winning all the raffle prizes!

The Taikai was on the Sunday. Seven of our members took part in the events - randori (sparring), tandoku embu (single form) and embu (pairform). We were fortunate to be awarded seven medals in these events.

Finally, we wish to express our deep gratitude to the event instructors for making the big effort to come to New York to teach us and also to Ohashi sensei and the kenshi of New York City Branch for all of the long hours they put in to making the events so smooth and enjoyable for all attendees.

Canadian reunion

Maria K. from the University of British Columbia Branch (Vancouver) made a return visit to our branch during the week of August 30th. She was in town visiting relatives and wished to get some additional practice in before the North American Study Session and Taikai in New York the following weekend.

Maria visited us around the same time last year and it was a delight to see her again.

On the evening of Wednesday July 28, the members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch presented a cheque for $8,400 to Ms. Lori Smith, Associate Vice President, Development, CAMH Foundation to support the ongoing efforts of CAMH to understand the root causes of drug addiction and to support treatment efforts.

The funds were raised from many generous donors in our 2010 "Kickathon" event - the 15th annual charity event we have held for this cause.

Following the cheque presentation Ms. Smith commented "As the longest running benefit event for CAMH, the Shorinji Kickathon has raised over $88,000 in support of research and treatment programs for addictions at our hospital. Supporting CAMH for the past 15 years, even when mental illness and addiction was shrouded in silence and shame, Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch has encouraged the community to step up and speak out against the stigma associated with these issues. We can’t thank them enough for their support and for being true champions of our cause!"

15th Annual "Kickathon"

On the hottest May 26th since records began (32 degrees) six members from Toronto Branch gathered to perform our 15th Annual Charity “Kickathon” on behalf of research and treatment programs for drug addiction offered by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

Despite the airless conditions, we were able to perform our 500 kicks with loud kiai to raise a total of $8,400 for the CAMH Foundation. Since our event began in 1996 we have raised a total of $88,400 for this important cause.

Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and is especially proud of the long association we've had with CAMH. We have held two classes per week at CAMH since February 1995 and have received tremendous support from the management and staff of the Centre.

We wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude to our many sponsors, some of whom have sponsored all of our events since 1996, and also to CAMH for the world-class services and education it provides to improve the lives of Canadians.

On the evening of January 25, 2010 we were most fortunate to receive a visit from Kazumi Ishikawa-sensei (daikenshi, 5th dan), the coach of Tohoku Gakuin University Branch in Miyagi, Japan.

Ishikawa-sensei was previously a member of Toronto Branch during his one year sabbatical at the nearby University of Toronto.

We were absolutely delighted to see him again.

The 3rd Annual Shorinji Kempo Ontario Taikai was held at the JCCC in Toronto on November 14th, 2009. All four Ontario WSKO Branches participated in the event.

The Taikai consisted of:

Atsugi Minami Doin 2009

On the evening of October 9, John McCulloch of Toronto Branch was kindly invited by Morohoshi sensei (Doin-cho of Atsugi Minami Doin) to join in his class.

Meeting with Hiate sensei

On October 8, John McCulloch of Toronto Branch had the opportunity to meet with Hiate sensei (Atsugi Doin) at the Landmark Tower in Yokohama. Hiate sensei was busy with final preparations for the All-Japan Taikai that weekend in Aomori but managed to re-arrange his schedule to come to Yokohama for dinner.

John McCulloch practised at Atsugi Doin in 1985 and is prviledge to remain a student of Hiate sensei to this day. Hiate sensei has taught seminars and training camps numerous times since his first visit to the region in 1995.

Meeting with Atsumi sensei

Thanks to a business trip to Yokohama, John McCulloch of Toronto Branch had the wonderful opportunity to meet with Atsumi sensei - the Doin-cho of Yokohama Negishi Doin.

Despite short notice, Atsumi sensei graciously agreed to meet for lunch and coffee.

It was a tremendous experience to listen to the fruits of his personal research on the deeper meaning of Shorinji Kempo kihon, especially as it related to Katsujin-ken (the fist that preserves or affirms life).

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Atsumi sensei for taking time from his busy schedule to come for this meeting.

North America East Coast Gasshuku 2009

On the weekend of September 5-6, 2009 members of Toronto Branch attended the North America East Coast Gasshuku (training camp) in New York City.

The event was recognized by WSKO as an official event and was led by Makino-sensei (Daihanshi, 8th dan) - one of Kaiso's earliest students. Makino-sensei is the instructor of Nishijin Doin in Kyoto, Japan.

It was great to hear Makino sensei share stories about what it was like to train with Doshin So. I found the overall experience to be quite enjoyable and enlightening. The American Kenshi were excellent hosts and it was a treat to learn from a wide variety Branch Masters, both American and Japanese. It was especially pleasing to hear Makino Sensei’s stories of his experience training under Kaiso.

Ever since the first minute in New York we were greeted by a cheerful and hospitable kenshi. The training facilities selected for the event provided us all with enough space to practice and the food was great. I feel particularly lucky being able to study under the guidance of so many senseis, including WSKO instructor Makino-sensei. We were all able to review many basic techniques and I found some new points, I have not been aware of, to almost every one of them.

Team Lutes Hits T.O!

Peter Lutes (shodan), a Canadian currently based in Takamatsu, Japan came along to visit us on August 17.

Accompanying him were his two sons Edward (minarai) and Nicholas (1st kyu). They are all members of Takamatsu Higashi Doin (led by Kubo sensei).

It was the first time they had experienced Shorinji Kempo practice outside of Japan.

Peter and Nicholas gave us an excellent "father and son" embu.

We look forward to seeing the Lutes family again soon.

World Taikai in Bali

John McCulloch (Toronto Branch Master) attended the World Taikai and Study Session in Denpassar, Bali, Indonesia from July 25-29 and acted as the proxy National Representative for Canada at the WSKO General Meeting held at the Inna Grand Hotel in Sanur on July 24.

It was a remarkable experience to train in Bali and see Shorinji Kempo from the Indonesian perspective. In addition, the event was a wonderful opportunity to meet many great friends (old and new) from all over the world.

One other major attraction (apart from the Bali itself!) was the chance to receive direct instruction from the top teachers of the art.

I would like to express deep thanks to the members of PERKEMI (Indonesian Federation) for hosting such a wonderful event and to WSKO staff for their round-the-clock efforts to help look after the international delegates.

Godorenshu - Barrie, June 2009

Members from all Branches of Shorinji Kempo Ontario headed to the Aikido Hiryukan Dojo in Barrie for the Q2 Godorenshu and Grading.

As ever the training facilities were excellent.

Following group kihon we moved on to study basic and tobi ukemi on the luxurious tatami!

After spending a bit of time in the air we split into different ranks to study hokei as taught by each of the four SKO Branch Masters.

We would like to thank Fontaine-sensei of Huronia Branch for organizing another great event.

Prior to the godorenshu there were several kyu examinations. Toronto kenshi Max and Patrick were successful in their sankyu test and Kevin also passed his ikkyu examination.

14th Annual Charity Shorinji Kempo "Kickathon"

Members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch took part in our customary Kaiso Day activity (annual charity “Kickathon”) on the evening of May 27, 2009.

We each performed 500 successive kicks with loud kiai (yell) in return for the generous sponsorship from many supporters.

Despite having only a small group participating in the event this year we were able to raise a total of $7,500 for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation in our event.

The “Kickathon” event has raised a total of $80,000 for this important cause since it began in 1996.

CAMH is a WHO-listed centre for research into the causes of addictions and their successful treatment. Our annual “Kickathon” is aimed at providing funds for:

1. research into the root causes of drug addiction, and
2. supporting drug cessation treatment programs offered by CAMH

In addition, we hope that the event will help, in a small way, help break down the social stigma associated with drug addiction and will help encourage individuals to seek treatment.

The philosophy of Shorinji Kempo emphasizes the importance of helping people to help themselves. We believe that this event helps us practice this ideal and offers a ray of hope to those seemingly trapped by a serious, life-threatening addictive illness.

We wish to thank our many generous sponsors for their continuing support, particularly at this challenging economic time.

Five members of Toronto Branch travelled to beautiful Trumansburg, NY on the Memorial Day wekend to attend the 31st Annual Cornell Shorinji Kempo Camp.

As before, we were amazed by his deep understanding of Shorinji Kempo technique and philosophy as well as his expert ability to teach them.

California Sun

More road trip news - this time a visit to the Peninsula Branch of San Mateo, California on Wednesday April 15. San Mateo is located about 19 miles south of San Francisco.

Peninsula Branch is part of a burgeoning Shorinji Kempo in Northern California which arose from years of effort by Harada sensei (San Francisco), Hirayama sensei (Silicon Valley) and Hagata sensei (Mt. Diablo).

Toronto Branch Master John McCulloch and Peninsula Branch Master Karahashi sensei have known each other for about 20 years but this was the first dojo visit.

The lesson was mainly focused on juho waza that evening and Karahashi sensei guided the members through the main points for breaking balance to ensure the throw will follow smoothly.

One kenshi had recently passed his shodan exam and this evening was his first exposure to the many nage waza of Shorinji Kempo - hopefully not too painful!

I would like to thank Karahashi sensei and the members of Peninsula Branch for their wonderful hospitality and kindness. Hopefully we will be able to welcome them at Toronto Branch soon.

New black belt!

Toronto Branch member Tony Tan succeeded in his examination for the rank of Junkenshi shodan (first degree black belt) on Monday March 23.

To celebrate his accomplishment, the members of Toronto Branch gave Tony a traditional style post-grading "appreciation" as used by the Indonesian Federation.

2008 Year End Ceremony

On the evening of December 17 members of Toronto Branch held a ceremony marking the last practice of the year.

After warm-up and stretching we had a vigorous kihon (basics) session as a group. Following that was a series of tandoku embu (single form) and hokei (technique) demonstrations by members.

Next up was Chinkon-gyo (meditation) and a talk by the Branch Master on the accomplishments of the current year and an outline of major goals for 2009.

2nd Annual SKO Taikai

On Saturday October 25, 2008 members of Shorinji Kempo Ontario branches gathered at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in North York for the 2nd Annual SKO Taikai.

Taikai are a valuable opportunity for Shorinji Kempo members to display the fruits of their hard work and increase the bonds of friendship between branches.

The event consisted of tandoku embu (single form) and kumi embu (pair form) sections divided according to rank.

In addition, members from Toronto Branch and Yorkville Branch gave demonstrations of goho randori (sparring). Our branch members used the double-layer safety equipment from Hombu which allows for vigorous practice while maintaining safety.

Isabel of Toronto Branch was awarded 2nd place in the Adult Dan Grade Tandoku Embu category.

Overall, the Taikai ran very smoothly and everyone enjoyed having a chance to participate.

On October 20, John paid a visit to Tokai University Shorinji Kempo Branch.

It was an especially interesting trip since John had practiced Shorinji Kempo there in the summer of 1985 when he was an exchange student at Tokai University School of Medicine and hadn't had a chance to train there since.

Hiate sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) has been the Branch Master at Tokai University for over 35 years and the members there reflect his high standards.

Much of the focus in the class was on preparing for examinations or the All-Japan Taikai in November.

John was very fortunate to spend time reviewing techniques one-on-one with Hiate sensei and then practicing kumiembu with Akiba kenshi (Chukenshi, 3rd dan).

Despite the long gap since the last training session at Tokai U., the experience was very familiar - enthusiastic kenshi, lots of teamwork in running the dojo, the close juxtaposition with other student clubs and high level embu with a lot of ippon se nage!

I would like to thank Hiate sensei and the members of Tokai University Branch for allowing me to relive my youth!

Thanks to Hiate sensei (Atsugi Doin), John McCulloch of Toronto Branch has been fortunate to enjoy close ties to the Kanagawa Shorinji Kempo Federation since 1985, especially Branches in or near Atsugi City.

During his recent visit to Japan, John was kindly hosted by Hiate sensei and his family and wishes to thank them very much for five star treatment received and for taking time from busy schedules to provide such a great experience!

During the visit there were occasions to meet with great friends including Nakamura sensei, Hayashi sensei, Morohoshi sensei, Negishi sensei, Kuramoto kenshi, Yamazaki "fireman" kenshi and Akiba kenshi - most of whom have visited Toronto Branch in the past.

Atsugi Minami Doin

On the evening of October 17, 2008, Toronto Branch Master John McCulloch had the great pleasure of training at Atsugi Minami Doin in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

Morohoshi sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan), the Atsugi Minami Doin-cho, have known each other since 1985 and have visited each other's dojo several times. This visit was a great chance to renew our friendship and train together once again.

The class largely focused on ways of performing juho technique without use of power - a fairly advanced approach. The time flew by (as did we!).

I am very grateful to Morohoshi sensei and the kenshi of Atsugi Minami Doin for sharing their knowledge. Also, I'd like to thank the Morohoshi family for their kindness and hospitality during my stay.

Eduardo returns!

We were fortunate to have a flying visit tonight from Eduardo Bello - a Toronto Branch member who is now working in Malaysia.

He reported that his work project is very intense but is looking forward to continuing his practice with the Malaysian Federation soon.

It was great to see Eduardo again for the first time in over 6 months.

We wish him every success in Malaysia and hope to see him again soon.

Hiate sensei leads 2008 Ontario Gasshuku

On the weekend of September 13-14, 2008 Hiate sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) led the 2008 Ontario Gasshuku at the JCCC in Toronto. A total of 55 members from Canada, USA and Japan attended the event.

Hiate sensei - a WSKO Instructor - has had a long bond of friendship with Toronto Branch and has come to teach in our city four times since 1995.

Toronto Branch members learned a great deal from Hiate sensei during the Gasshuku. Those kenshi who had not seen Hiate sensei before frequently commented on his incredible speed and power as well as his open and friendly demeanour.

We were also able to enjoy many fun times with Hiate sensei and the other members of the Kanagawa delagation during their stay including trips to restaurants, Toronto landmarks and the Niagara Falls region.

We are tremendously grateful to Hiate sensei, Mrs. Hiate and the Kanagawa Federation members for their tremendous kindness and support.

We are already looking forward to our next meeting...

Arrived at the Kotobuki Lodge safely. I’m sharing the lodge with about 20 kenshi from Spain, two separate branches. Most of them are nidan or above. There are also two members from the Finland federation, Timo and Kelsie - father and daughter.

There are about 40 Japanese university students. This number is sharply down given that the camp coincides with many of their final exams.

Day 1 was a long one.

Arrived at Hombu at 8 am and met Hombu staff. Assembled for Samu. Fewer kenshi means that there is much more cleaning to be carried out. We also do Samu at the end of the day and it is particularly challenging after a day of practice.

We had four sessions of technique practice throughout the day…About six hours total. We could not access the lectures in Japanese so they gave us extra technique practice.

The Japanese students are very friendly and some remember me from last time. The largest group is from the medical school at Okayama.

The language barrier does not prevent one from absorbing tips from senior instructors. We spent two hours in the morning practicing Gyaku Gote. My wrist was pretty sore. A senior instructor did a seiho technique on my wrist and then the pain subsided. Pretty convincing!

Day 2

A hot day. We are getting tired and trying to avoid injury. Both members of the Finnish branch received minor injuries today. I purchased a sweat resistant t-shirt from hombu. It really helped. I’m grateful for the Finnish federation members because they are fluent in English. Otherwise it would be a lonely week!

Today we worked on uchi age zuki, hara uki geri, randori, some upper curriculum techniques, sen no sen, tai no sen, go no sen.

At night we went to a social arranged my Hombu for WSKO members and enjoyed fellowship, good food and drink.

Lots of Okuri Gote, Kiri Gote, Kaishin zuki.

6 hours of class time instruction. Ended with a professional embu demonstration by senior students—yondan and higher.

Day 4

Half day. Three hours of practice. Samu. Closing ceremony. 12 Japanese students were awarded 1^st kyu. Celebration followed with pictures. The Japanese are very formal but they become surprisingly sentimental at the closing ceremony.

Thus ends a very intense week of training in hot weather conditions in a remote region of Japan… What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger!

Cheque presentation to CAMH Foundation

Earlier today, John McCulloch of Toronto Branch made a cheque presentation for $6,000.00 to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health ("CAMH") Foundation. The funds were raised in our 13th Annual Kaiso Day "Kickathon."

Dean Hughes, Vice President, Community Development of the CAMH Foundation commented "over the past 13 years, Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch has raised over $72,000 to support the work of CAMH. Above and beyond its philanthropy, Shorinji Kempo has shown great strength and courage in supporting a highly stigmatized cause. We salute the efforts of all of the members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto for their dedication not only to their practice, but to their community. Thank you!"

Ikuo returns!

Toronto Branch members were thrilled by a visit from Toronto Branch alumnus Dr. Ikuo Kageyama (5th dan). Ikuo is currently a full Professor at the prestigious Nippon Dental University in Niigata, Japan.

Before coming to Toronto, Ikuo was a member of Tokyo's famous Yamanote Doin and studied from Matsuda sensei there. In addition, Ikuo was well known by WSKO members around the world since he had acted as a translator during several international seminars at Shorinji Kempo Hombu.

Despite the long passage of time since he was a member at our Branch (over 10 years) it felt like only yesterday since he last trained with us.

Ikuo helped share his knowledge with our members and all kenshi greatly enjoyed his warm and insightful teaching style.

During his talk, Ikuo focussed on his experiences of learning from Kaiso at Hombu, stressed the importance of living according to the true goals of Shorinji Kempo and differentiated Shorinji Kempo from other "martial arts."

All members of Toronto Branch hope it is not too long before we have a chance meet Ikuo again.

John Dadosky (junkenshi) of the Toronto branch visited the Florida International University branch in Miami on June 8th.

The branch is home of Eric Messersmith Sensei who is a professor at FIU. He was away that weekend so I trained with Mike and Anatole. I was asked to lead the kihon for the class which included a third kyu and two newcomers.

I was impressed at the hospitality of the branch in picking me up at the downtown hotel by Mike. Anatole gave me a ride home in his convertible with the top down playing salsa music. A true Miami experience!

13th Annual Charity "Kickathon"

On the evening of Wednesday June 4, 2008, eight members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch took part in its 13th Annual Charity "Kickathon" in aid of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health ("CAMH") Foundation.

We performed 100 continuous kata (sequences of techniques) supported by generous sponsorship from our families, friends, neighbors and colleagues. We wish to salute the many kind supporters who enabled us to raise a total of $6,000 this year.

The Kickathon event is the longest standing charitable initiative supporting the CAMH Foundation. Since its inception we have raised a total of $72,500 for this cause. The monies raised are used to support CAMH's cessation programs for drug addicts as well as research into the basic causes of addiction.

The annual event also represents Toronto Branch's "Founders Day" activity - an event that manifests the philosophy of Doshin So (the founder of Shorinji Kempo). The founding philosophy of Shorinji Kempo is to cultivate ourselves, become strong and to support those around us. By living in accord with this philosophy we hope we can become useful to our communities and improve our lives.

Charitable and community support initiatives are an important element of practice for all Shorinji Kempo members worldwide.

30th Annual Cornell Camp

On the US Memorial Day holiday weekend, the 30th Annual Cornell Shorinji Kempo Camp (Gasshuku) was held in Camp Barton Trumansburg, NY. Sakuyama Sensei (Ibaragi Takahagi Doin, Japan) once again led the training session.

This year the attendees were also lucky enough to hava Ken Ohashi Sensei, the founder of the Cornell Camp tradition, joining the them, his camp has become an event that Kenshi across North America look forward to.

Three Kenshi from Toronto Branch attended this year, for those of us who were returning to the camp it was a great chance to catch up with and train with old friends and like the newcomers make new friends with the Kenshi we meet.

After a fun but vigorous warm up and Kihon Sakuyama Sensei introduced the principle of "Jou Kyo Ka Jitsu" through practicing taisabaki. Later in the day this was expanded to cover the use of footwork in juho instead of muscular force.

All 3 kenshi from Toronto Branch Kenshi, Stewart, Kevin and John, were amazed at the depth of knowledge and understanding Sakuyama Sensei has of Shorinji Kempo as well as his ability to transmit his understanding to Kenshi he is teaching. After being in a class taught by Sakuyama Sensei you are left with a sense that having been taught by him is a real privilege.

It's a small world after all

Toronto Branch was honored by a visit from Mr. Yasuhiro Oue of Tokyo on May 14, 2008.

Mr. Oue had previously been a member of the British Federation, just like John McCulloch (Toronto Branch Master). We had a good chance to share memories of our times there.

In addition, Mr. Oue had studied under two legendary instructors during his training in Japan - Nakano sensei (Saitama) and Akiyoshi sensei (Tokyo).

Godorenshu held at Toronto Branch

Kenshi from Toronto Branch, Yorkville Branch and North York Branch gathered at our dojo on the evening of April 28, 2008 for a Shorinji Kempo Ontario Godorenshu event.

Godorenshu are group training events that allow SKO members to practice with their peers from other Branches and have a chance to learn from a variety of teachers.

Following Chinkon-gyo, we had a period of kihon (basics) training which included ways to diagnose problems with body alignment and balance when making tsuki (punches).

The hokei (technique) sections of the event comprised both goho and juho. Each of the Branch Masters of the attending Branches took turns to teach each group of kenshi by rank.

The lecture was focussed on two talks given by Kaiso So Doshin in the late 1960s which emphasized the primacy of action over theory and also the need to have a vision for one's future in order to take the necessary steps in the present.

All members greatly enjoyed the chance to train with their SKO friends.

We'd like to thank members of the other Branches for attending and look forward very much to the next Godorenshu event.

Toronto Branch members after the 2007 Closing Ceremony

Members of Toronto Branch gathered at our dojo this evening for our annual closing ceremony. We had a number of members missing due to illness or family commitments, but had an enjoyable event nevertheless.

The event consisted of 108 punches and kicks followed by Chinkon-gyo. After that each member came to the shomen area, greeted their fellows and stated their name and rank. Finally, there was an address by the Branch Master which described the achievements and major events of the past year (see this blog) and our hopes for 2008.

In addition, one of our members - Kevin Legault - was presented with his brown belt after successfully passing his 3rd kyu examination. The grading which was organized by Shorinji Kempo Ontario was held on Sunday December 16 at the North York Branch.

Training at Atsugi Doin

On November 15, John McCulloch of Toronto Branch had the great pleasure of being reunited with Hiate-sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) at his dojo - Atsugi Doin in Kanagawa-ken, Japan. Hiate-sensei is the founder of Atsugi Doin and has taught there steadfastly for the past 35 years. Hiate-sensei is also a Hombu and WSKO Instructor and has become quite well known to kenshi in Europe and North America as well as Japan.

John had the good fortune to study under Hiate-sensei at Atsugi Doin in the summer of 1985. Since that time the bond of friendship between them has grown ever deeper and our Branches are closely linked.

First Annual Shorinji Kempo Ontario Taikai

Members of Toronto Branch participated in the First Annual Shorinji Kempo Taikai held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on October 27.

Over 40 kenshi from all the Ontario Branches were represented at the event (Toronto, North York, Huronia and Yorkville).

Toronto Branch members participated in the event in a variety of ways:

On the evening of May 23, 2007, Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch held its annual charity Kickathon event in aid of the CAMH Foundation. Thanks to our many generous sponsors we were able to raise $5,500 for this cause.

The funds we raise are earmarked for use in supporting programs to assist drug addicts recover from their addiction as well as basic research into the causes of drug addiction.

Shorinji Kempo was established by Kaiso So Doshin-sensei in 1947 with the goal of helping people realize their true potential and make valuable contributions to society. Drug addiction is a catastrophic condition for those that suffer from it (and their friends and family) and through this event we sincerely hope that we can help at least one person rediscover the joy and beauty of life.

Report on 2007 Cornell Gasshuku

On the weekend of May 26-28th, the 29th Annual Cornell Shorinji Kempo Camp (Gasshuku) was held in Camp Barton Trumansburg, NY. Sakuyama Sensei (Ibaragi Takahagi Doin, Japan) once again led the training session where Kenshi from USA, Canada and Japan participated in this yearly tradition that has become a training staple for the north-east region branches of North America.

Four Kenshi from Toronto Branch attended this year; it was the first time for all of them at Cornell.

Sakuyama Sensei, after very fun but strenuous warm up and Kihon, focused on the importance of listening to and studying our bodies when in movement. He made emphasis on how each and every Kenshi must study his/her body when executing a technique, meaning analyzing how the body moves and balance shifts, finding which muscles are actually leading the motion and most important of all, where “our” centre is located throughout the technique.

All 4 Toronto Branch kenshi, Elisabeth, Robert, Kevin and Eduardo, found Sakuyama Sensei to be a real inspiration to continue training and practicing Shorinji Kempo as well as having enjoyed very much meeting Kenshi from all over America and Japan who indeed are great examples of how Shorinji Kempo brings the best qualities out of every individual.

2006 Closing Ceremony

Toronto Branch held its annual Closing Ceremony on the evening of December 20, 2006. The event formally marks the end of the year's training and provides an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the preceding year and focus on what we need to work on in the year ahead.

We were fortunate to have members from the neighboring Yorkville Branch with us this year.

Toronto Branch members performed embu (pairform display of techniques) during this year's Closing Ceremony. The embu were as follows:

The event was not a competition and, therefore, no scores were announced. However, the format of the event was otherwise identical to that in a major embukai and allowed the Ontario kenshi a good opportunity to experience performing embu under these conditions.

Ota-sensei visits Toronto Branch

Koji Ota-sensei (7th dan) of JR Shikoku Branch, Takamatsu, Japan visited Toronto Branch on the evening of October 25, 2006.

Ota-sensei has studied Shorinji Kempo for many years and learnt the art from many great first generation teachers such as Kaiso So Doshin-sensei, Misawa-sensei and Tamura-sensei. Accordingly, his understanding of Shorinji Kempo technique and philosophy is very deep.

Ota-sensei recently returned from Africa where he was an instructor for the WSKO African Study Sessions in Tanzania and Kenya.

Ota-sensei taught us about many important basic points such as:

how to make kamae to protect weak points
how to make a fast and smooth keri
how to make ukemi safely from nage

Ota-sensei is an expert at using technical practice as a base for exploring philosophical items. He believes that the direct person-to-person communication we have in Shorinji Kempo is extremely important for the wellbeing of society.

We are extremely grateful to Ota-sensei for his teachings and inspiration.

Karlstad Gasshuku, Sweden

On the weekend of October 21-22, 106 kenshi from three continents gathered in Karlstad, Sweden for the 2006 Karlstad Gasshuku. The participants came from Branches in Sweden, Finland, Germany, UK, Japan and Canada.

The instructor of the event was Kizumi Hiate-sensei (Seihanshi, 7th dan) of Atsugi Doin, Kanagawa, Japan. Hiate-sensei has been a Branch Master for 34 years and is also a WSKO Instructor. Hiate-sensei is Vice-Chairman of the Kanagawa Shorinji Kempo Federation - the second largest regional federation in Japan.

Assisting Hiate-sensei with the teaching duties were:

Anders Pettersson (Daikenshi, 5th dan) - Karlstad Branch
John McCulloch (Daikenshi, 5th dan) - Toronto Branch
Ake Olsson (Seikenshi, 4th dan) - Karlstad Studenter Branch
Yasuyuki Murai (Seikenshi, 4th dan) - Atsugi Branch

The seminar consisted of kihon practice in the mornings, lecture and techniques by rank in the afternoons. Hiate-sensei gave a presentation on Oct. 21 based on his personal history and on Oct. 22 related how kenshi should act based on an appreciation of dharma.

Personally speaking, it was a wonderful event. It was especially enjoyable to train under Hiate-sensei again, to meet Anders-sensei, Steve-sensei and many other great friends from Europe once again. I am very grateful to Hiate-sensei for his teachings and to Karlstad Branch for their kind invitation to join the event.

WSKO Eastern North American Regional Instructors Study Session

Toronto Branch was a co-host of an official WSKO Study Session in Toronto on the weekend of September 16-17, 2006. The event was held in the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. We were most fortunate to have such a high level facility for the seminar.

The Study Session focused on the development of instructors and Branch staff. Consequently, in addition to the usual technical study, participants reviewed how to properly judge randori and embu. In addition, the instructors described in detail many aspects of how Shorinji Kempo is to be run as an organization worldwide.

The Study Session also permitted meetings of the Canadian and US Branch Masters . The meetings addressed matters of common concern, especially how we can work more effectively to promote Shorinji Kempo and collaborate on various areas. It was certainly valuable to be able to tap into the collected experience and wisdom of the group.

Gradings for 3rd dan and 4th dan were also conducted by the visiting instructors.

On the evening of Saturday September 16, the participants gathered for an informal dinner at the Crowne Plaza Don Valley Hotel. A particularly poignant moment was a euology to Yamamori-sensei (the teacher who brought Shorinji Kempo to North America in the 1960s) by Uekuma-sensei (South Bay Branch). It was a very moving speech.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the visiting instructors for their excellent instruction and to the participants for making such a great effort to attend the event.

Toronto kenshi attends Hombu training camp

John Dadosky of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch traveled to Tadotsu, Japan to attend the Hombu "University Training Camp A" which was held from August 7-10, 2006. This training seminar is primarily aimed at members of Japanese university Branches, however it is also possible to attend as a WSKO member.

28th Annual Cornell Camp (part one)

The 2006 Cornell group

From May 27-29, 2006, kenshi from the USA, Canada and Japan gathered at Camp Barton, Trumansburg, NY for the 28th Annual Cornell Shorinji Kempo Camp (Gasshuku). Since its foundation by Ken Ohashi-sensei in 1978, the Cornell Gasshuku has become a mainstay for kenshi in the north-east region of North America.

The Gasshuku was led by Sakuyama-sensei (Ibaragi Takahagi Doin, Japan) and Atsumi-sensei (Yokohama Negishi Doin). Both instructors were formerly staff members at Hombu and studied directly under our Founder - Kaiso So Doshin-sensei.

11th Annual "Kickathon"

On the evening of May 17, 2006, members of Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch gathered at the main gym of the Addiction Research Foundation site of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to hold their annual charity Kickathon.

Shorinji Kempo Branches worldwide hold charity or community service events each year in the month of May as a memorial to our founder Kaiso So Doshin (1911-1980). One of Kaiso's famous maxims was "try to live your life half for self and half for others" and it is in that spirit that we host the Kickathon.

The funds raised by Kickathon will be donated to the CAMH Foundation to assist its world class work in the field of drug addiction research and treatment.

This year we were able to raise a total of $8,000. We are grateful to our many sponsors for their generosity.

Since 1996, Shorinji Kempo Toronto Branch has raised $61,500 for this cause.

Farewell to Slava!

After almost four years of training at Toronto Branch, Slava Burdenyuk kenshi is returning home to his native Ukraine.

Slava joined Toronto Branch in 2002 having originally been a member of Odessa Branch in the Ukraine. With constant effort and study, Slava rose to the rank of Shokenshi 2nd dan and was appointed an Assistant (jokyo) of the Branch. Many kenshi will remember the care and patience shown by Slava as he helped them establish their form.

Slava was also very active in attending seminars and gasshuku, including the Cornell Gasshuku and WSKO seminars in Calgary, Ann Arbor, Sweden and Japan.

We wish Slava every future success and hope to see him again before too long.

Godorenshu Held at North York Branch

Kenshi from all the Shorinji Kempo Ontario Branches gathered at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on Sunday April 30 for a Godorenshu hosted by North York Branch.

After a warm-up and group kihon (basics) training, the kenshi worked on goho techniques and randori ("sparring") while wearing bogu (body armor). This type of equipment allows full force counters to the body and shows clearly any deficiencies in distance, timing or accuracy.

Following the goho training, the kenshi split into groups to focus on technique practice according to rank.

Kyu gradings for adults and children were also held. Eduardo Bello of Toronto Branch was successful in his grading for 2nd kyu.

Steve Williams-sensei visits Toronto Branch

Steve Williams-sensei and Michelle Williams kenshi from the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF) visited our Branch today. Williams-sensei is the Branch Master of Harrow Branch, north of London. He was formerly the Vice-Chairman of the BSKF and is the moderator of the widely read Shorinji Kempo forum on e-budo.com.

John McCulloch, the Branch Master of Toronto Branch, and Williams-sensei have been friends for many years and had taken their 2nd dan test together. Hence, it was a great pleasure to welcome Williams-sensei and Michelle to our dojo.

Williams-sensei gave the lecture for the class. He observed how on uniform Shorinji Kempo training is worldwide, that we all share the same spirit and goals and how it feels like being with family when visiting another dojo regardless of where it is. Williams-sensei also gave us some advice based on his experiences of training within a federation.

We look forward to seeing Williams-sensei and Michelle again soon.

Toronto Godorenshu Feb. 13, 2006

Kenshi from Toronto Branch, Eglinton Branch and North York Branch gathered at the Toronto Branch on the evening of February 13, 2006 for a Godorenshu (group training session).

The main focus of the Godorenshu was studying the technique of Kazumi Ishikawa-sensei (Daikenshi, 5th dan) - the teacher of Tohoku Gakuin University in Miyagi-ken, Japan. Ishikawa-sensei has studied Shorinji Kempo since 1972 and he studied under Kaiso So Doshin and Ohta-sensei (Daihanshi, 9th dan).

In kihon, Ishikawa-sensei emphasized how to make emphasis body motion and footwork. In hokei (techniques), the main focus was okuri gote and kiri gote.

Ontario region Branch Masters had an opportunity to study 5th dan curriculum techniques and also focussed on teaching according to various ranks.

We are all grateful for the kindness of Ishikawa-sensei for his teachings and we look forward to more Godorenshu in future.

On the evening of December 21, 2005 members of Toronto Branch and Eglinton Branch gathered at Toronto Branch for its annual closing ceremony.

The event consisted of group kihon, a dantai embu demonstration by Eglinton Branch, a variety of demonstations of kumiembu by Toronto Branch, chinkon-gyo and a speech reviewing the achievements of 2005 and looking ahead to 2006.

In addition, some Toronto kenshi received certificates for the successful completion of recent exams: Andre and Eduardo (3rd kyu), John (2nd kyu) and Stas (1st dan).

On the evening of October 17, 2005, Toronto Branch members John McCulloch and Slava Burdenyuk visited Atsugi Doin. We have had a long friendship with Atsugi Doin extending back to 1985 and Hiate-sensei has been a strong supporter of our Branch. Indeed, he has visited Toronto Branch three times in recent years.

During our visit to Kanagawa, we were taken care of by Hiate-sensei, his family and students.
